New to the City? Your Guide to Finding a GP in Edinburgh

Step out of 200 Cowgate, and the Old Town closes in around you. Stone arches overhead, footsteps echoing off the walls, the University of Edinburgh’s Central Area just up the hill. It’s a brilliant place to live. It’s also a new health system to learn, because Scotland does a few things its own way.

New to the City? Your Guide to Finding a GP in Edinburgh

How Do You Register With a GP in Edinburgh?

You sign up with a practice that covers your term-time address. Edinburgh practices have catchment areas, and the popular ones fill up fast with new students. You can only register once you’re here, and NHS Lothian’s website flags which practices are closed to new patients.

The University Health Service, at the Richard Verney Health Centre on Bristo Square, is the obvious first try. It takes students who live in its practice area or its listed student accommodation, accepts applications online only, and is upfront that it can’t take everyone. Appointments are booked through reception on 0131 650 2777.

At Heriot-Watt? Riccarton General Practice, in the Edinburgh Campus Health Centre, lets you register whenever you like with a General Practice Registration form.

Why Should a Pharmacy Be Your First Stop?

Because for most minor illnesses, it’s quicker than a GP and needs no appointment. Live in Scotland or register with a Scottish GP, and NHS Pharmacy First Scotland gives you free advice and treatment for common conditions. Prescriptions cost nothing here either. In England, that’s £9.90 an item.

Bristo Square Pharmacy, in the Health and Wellbeing Centre on Bristo Square (0131 667 8247), dispenses NHS prescriptions and offers Pharmacy First Plus. It’s not far from 200 Cowgate.

How Do You Get an NHS Dentist in Edinburgh?

You register with one, because routine NHS dental treatment in Scotland depends on it. NHS Lothian publishes a monthly list of practices taking new NHS patients, so pick one from the latest version and phone to check before you turn up. You’re only officially registered once you’ve been seen, and a full course of NHS treatment currently tops out at £384.

If a tooth flares up before you’re on anyone’s books, call Chalmers Emergency Dental Centre on 0131 537 8801, Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm. Evenings and weekends, it’s NHS 24 on 111.

What Do Edinburgh Students Wish They’d Known?

  • University Health Service registrations open online every Tuesday at 10am and close once the weekly cap is hit. Missed it? Set an alarm for next Tuesday.
  • Your first face-to-face GP appointment needs original paper documents: matriculation card, photo ID and proof of address. A screenshot won’t cut it.
  • Vitality Dental Care, an independent practice inside the Potterrow Student Union building, offers free registration, free check-ups and NHS dental services.
  • Every practice near you full? Email NHS Practitioner Services at [email protected] and they’ll talk you through what’s left.

None of this is thrilling, but an hour spent on it now saves a miserable week in November. Settle in at 200 Cowgate, then tick these off while the Old Town still feels new.
