This is not your average end-of-year party. Hosted by the Bournemouth University Students’ Union at the Chapel Gate Sports Campus, this 12-hour event is the largest student festival in the UK. You get live main-stage music, massive crowds, and funfair rides. The music keeps going all night. The real challenge is making it all the way to the end of the night (at 5 am). If you have the drive, you join the rest of the crowd down on the beach for the iconic survivor’s photo as the sun rises calmly over the water. It might be exhausting, but as a student, these are the nights you live for.

The Legendary Bournemouth 7s Festival

If you love sports, live music, or just a massive party atmosphere, you need to mark off the May Bank Holiday in your calendar. The Bournemouth 7s Festival claims the title of the world’s largest sports and music festival. Once again taking over Chapel Gate, it brings together more than 30,000 people. The days are packed with fast-paced sports tournaments. When the sun goes down, the huge evening festival arenas open up. The energy is unmatched.

How Do You Make the Most of Welcome Week?

September sets the tone for your whole year. Welcome Week takes over Talbot Campus, The Old Fire Station, and various other local venues for a massive multi-day lineup. This is your best opportunity to find your people. You can expect official icebreakers, huge, themed parties, and the Freshers Fair, where you can load up on freebies and join societies. Throw yourself into it, chat to everyone you meet, and explore the different venues.

The Spooky Side of Bournemouth

When October arrives, the local nightlife completely transforms. Bournemouth hosts some of the largest student Halloween experiences in the country. Popular local hubs, particularly The George Tapps, go to extreme lengths with full venue makeovers and intense special effects. The atmosphere is brilliant. Everyone goes all out with their costumes, making it one of the busiest and most entertaining nights of the first term.

How to Survive Festival Season

  • Sort your tickets early: Both the SUBU Summer Ball and Bournemouth 7s sell out fast. Do not wait until the week before to check if your mates are going.
  • Master the journey: Chapel Gate is a trip from the city centre. Organise your travel, be it a booked taxi or a scheduled bus, well before the day.
  • Wrap up for the beach: That 5 AM survivor’s photo sounds great until the coastal wind hits you. Bring a warm jumper.
  • Pace the party: A 12-hour festival is a marathon. Drink plenty of water and grab some proper food between the music sets.
