Weekend Escapes: The Best Day Trips from Newcastle upon Tyne
Newcastle is brilliantly positioned for a day away, offering quick and affordable routes to coastlines, Roman history, and medieval market towns before you even have to think about dinner. We’re going to explore a small selection of our favourite day trips from Newcastle today. Hopefully you find a place you need to explore this academic year.

Where Can You Escape to in Under an Hour?
Durham and Tynemouth are both less than an hour from Newcastle, making them ideal for a spontaneous afternoon away from your desk. Trains to Durham take between 11 and 14 minutes, meaning you can step out of the station and straight into medieval history almost immediately. The famous Durham Cathedral is open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Saturday, with a suggested five-pound donation for entry.
If you prefer the coast, the Metro Yellow line takes you straight to Tynemouth. Every weekend, the Victorian station hosts a market filled with local produce, books, and vintage clothes. A short walk leads you to Tynemouth Priory, Longsands beach, and the rock pools of King Edward’s Bay.
How do you get to Hadrian’s Wall?
You can reach the edge of the Roman frontier by heading west on the Tyne Valley line from Newcastle Central Station. Trains get you to Hexham in roughly 36 to 44 minutes, while Haltwhistle sits about an hour down the line. When the season is right, the AD122 Hadrian’s Wall Country Bus picks up the route, connecting Hexham and Haltwhistle directly to the historic settlements along the Wall. It is a straightforward way to trade lecture notes for ancient history without needing a car.
Is Alnwick Worth the Bus Journey?
Alnwick is well worth the journey if you want to explore a classic market town and an imposing medieval castle. Arriva’s X15 bus leaves Haymarket bus station roughly every hour, taking around 1 hour 26 minutes to reach Alnwick. The castle is just a five-minute walk from the local bus station. Keep in mind that Alnwick Castle closes for the season on 20 October 2026 and reopens in late March, so plan your visit accordingly. If you miss the X15, the X18 and X20 routes offer alternative departures from Haymarket.
Can You Visit the Holy Island in a Day?
Holy Island is entirely possible as a day trip, provided you check the tide times before setting off. Lindisfarne sits at the end of a tidal causeway that floods twice daily. Northumberland County Council publishes safe crossing schedules online, and local advisors recommend adding thirty minutes to their timings for safety. The walking route across the sands requires daylight and local knowledge, so stick to the road when the tide allows safe passage.
Finding a base puts all of these locations within easy reach when you need a break from studying. Universal Student Living provide flexible accommodation in Newcastle to help you settle in from day one.
