A university with a rich history, Kingston has existed under a number of different guises over the years. Founded as Kingston Technical Institute in 1899, the School of Art separated from it in 1930 and later became Kingston College of Art. Some 27 years later, the former Ministry of Education recognised Kingston as a Regional College of Technology.

In 1970, it merged with the College of Art to become Kingston Polytechnic, offering up 34 major courses, of which 17 were at Degree level. Five years down the line, Kingston merged with the Gipsy Hill College of Education, itself founded in 1917, incorporating the college's faculty into Kingston's Division of Educational Studies.

Kingston was granted university status under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. Just 12 months later, Kingston opened the Roehampton Vale campus building and in 1995, acquired Dorich House.

With such a history, the institution deserves alumni to match. With that in mind, it has launched its own exhibition called ‘Made in Kingston’ – an alumni wall of fame which was created to publicly recognise the success of its former students so its current crop can take inspiration from this group of role models.

The academic achievements of these people were thanks to the breadth of quality courses taught at Kingston over a number of years: Engineering, Art & Design, Architecture, Surveying, Business, Accountancy, Law, and Geology. More recent graduates have taken on some of the institution’s newer courses, such as Sports Science and Drama.

Some of the key moments from this exhibition are:

Sir David Chipperfield's RIBA Royal Gold Medal – approved personally by the Queen – in recognition of a lifetime's contribution to architecture

Caryn Franklin's campaign for a wider range of beauty and body ideals in the fashion industry

Malcolm Brown's Silver Medal from the Geological Society's Petroleum Group

Fiona Banner's installation for Tate Britain's Duveen Galleries

Richard Deakin's appointment as Chief Executive of the National air traffic control service NATS

Gail Emms' work with youngsters for the 2012 Olympics

Lawrence Dallaglio's Six Nations cycle ride and continued commitment to raising millions of pounds for Sport Relief and those with cancer

Nigel Pleming's award for Environmental Law Silk of the Year

Helen Storey's MBE

Ben Barnes' starring role in the movie blockbuster Killing Bono

Those currently studying at the university have been galvanised by the motivational nature of the exhibition, filling them with the enthusiasm and belief that they too can follow in the footsteps of their peers and make a serious impact in the path they choose to take when they have completed their studies.

Meanwhile, Kingston staff can be lauded for some excellent achievements of late, not least being ranked top of the pile out of 121 institutions for its graphic design and product design courses by The Guardian newspaper in 2017. Kingston also won The Guardian University Award for Teaching Excellence in the same year.
