Queen Mary University of London counts eight Nobel Prize winners amongst its glittering alumni and former members of staff. Its reputation precedes itself and, as a member of the Russell Group, it has picked up awards for quality, including finishing ninth in the UK in the Research Excellence Framework, and is the proud owner of three Athena Swan Silver and seven Bronze awards.
With more than 130 years of teaching excellence, it was the first institution to be awarded the Engage Watermark Gold Award for excellence in public engagement. The university now has more than 21,000 students and 4,000 staff, making it one of the biggest University of London colleges.
Research is taught and conducted across a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, law, medicine and dentistry, and science and engineering. Based in a creative and culturally diverse area of east London, its main site in the Mile End area of Tower Hamlets is one of the largest self-contained residential campuses in the capital. It also has campuses in Holborn, Smithfield and Whitechapel.
In recent years, Queen Mary has ranked top in London among Russell Group universities for student satisfaction according to the National Student Survey, with a number of subject areas scoring higher than 90% for ‘overall satisfaction’ including Medicine, Dentistry, Law and English.
A constituent college of the federal University of London, it dates back to the foundation of London Hospital Medical College in 1785. Queen Mary College, named after Mary of Teck, was admitted to the University of London in 1915 and in 1989 merged with Westfield College to form Queen Mary and Westfield College.
In 1995 Queen Mary and Westfield College merged with St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College and the London Hospital Medical College to form the School of Medicine and Dentistry. The Medical College of the Royal London Hospital (now part of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry) was England’s first medical school when it opened in 1785.

Its notable alumni include Esther McVey, the Conservative Party politician who was elected as the Member of Parliament for Tatton in 2017. Previously she was MP for Wirral West from 2010 until losing the seat in 2015. She is also a former television presenter and businesswoman.
The university is also where Peaches Honeyblossom Geldof-Cohen (Peaches Geldof) studied. She was a columnist, television personality and model, who sadly died in 2014. She was the second daughter of musician Bob Geldof and television presenter Paula Yates.
Its most recent Nobel laureates were Sir Charles Kao for physics in 2009 and Mario Vargas Llosa for literature in 2010.
Times Higher Education has ranked Queen Mary equal 46th in a ranking of European universities and it rated the institution 15th best university in the UK in 2017. It was rated in the top five universities in London in the Complete University Guide 2017 league table.
In its university league tables this year, The Guardian ranks Queen Mary first for Media and Film Studies, second for Medicine in the UK, and first in London for the same subject.
